Windows 8 was a drastic shift in the Windows universe

surface2We saw an operating system that moved away from the desktop environment we’re all quite used to, and brought the tiled Modern UI. I can’t lie to you, I’m still not quite into the new look and feel, since most of my experience has been on my kid’s laptop and the OS is clearly designed to live and breathe on a touch screen. But it’s been nearly six months since Microsoft released Windows 8, and early adopters should be well-accustomed to the new interface. We were ready, upon release, to provide OverDrive Media Console for Windows 8. The Windows 8-native app was designed to allow the same experience on a Windows 8 tablet or computer, as on a mobile device.

Sharing the mobile experience means that the Windows 8-native app does not support WMA Audiobooks and Music, WMV Videos, or transferring titles to mobile devices. However, the previous version of OverDrive Media Console can be installed alongside the new version to allow users to transfer books or enjoy the Windows Media content under Windows 8’s desktop mode. So with two flavors of OMC available for Windows 8, we’ve got two great tastes that taste great together!

When you, or your users, get your hands on a Windows 8 device, there are a few things you may need to be aware of when using both version of OMC on one computer. The Windows Media Player Security Upgrade will require running Internet Explorer 10 as an administrator. In some cases, using IE10’s compatibility mode may also be necessary to make sure the security upgrade can run. When using both versions of OMC on a Windows 8 computer, these are steps to take to make sure the correct format opens in the appropriate version of OMC (available from our help pages):

  1.  Once you’ve found an audiobook, music, or video that you want to check out, save it to your computer instead of opening it. To do that, right-click the Download button, then select ‘Save As,’ or select the Download button, then Save.
  2. Once the ODM file has been downloaded, right-click (or swipe down) on it.
  3. Select Open With, then choose the right version of OMC:
WMA and WMV titles: Choose OverDrive Media Console. You can also open MP3 titles with this too, if you prefer.
MP3 titles: Choose OverDrive Media Console for Windows 8.

Once you have both versions installed, you can enjoy OverDrive media in the old style or new. In case you are wondering whether or not the steps we recommend have been verified to work, I must confess that I had to consult the help pages when setting up my daughter’s laptop on Christmas morning, so she could continue listening to her OverDrive audiobooks.

There’s an App for Nook Color, Tablet and Kindle Fire!

Did you know there is an app for OverDrive Media Console for your Nook Color, Nook Tablet or Kindle Fire?

To get the app on your Nook Color or Nook Tablet read Getting the Nook Tablet App. Follow the steps and you’ll be downloading directly to your device in a few minutes.

Why should you use the OverDrive Media Console app? For Nook Tablet users it’s a lot faster and easier to get eBooks. You do need WiFi access. If you don’t have WiFi in your home you may use the free WiFi at any of the Libraries, Starbucks, McDonald’s or your other favorite coffeehouse.

To get the app on your Kindle Fire read Kindle Fire Users Rejoice.

Why should you use the OverDrive Media Console app? This app allows you to download ePUB formatted eBooks and MP3 Audio Books to your Kindle Fire.  Without it you can not get ePUB formatted eBooks.  Some publishers do not allow us to offer their books in Kindle eBook format but will allow ePUB format so it opens up a larger choice of eBooks to you.  Also, all the selecting and downloading is down in the app which is actually easier than sending the eBook to Amazon first before syncing it to your device.

Kindle Fire and Library eBooks

We don’t have a Kindle Fire yet but some patrons are reporting issues about how to get Library eBooks onto their Kindle Fire Tablet.

I did locate this information which maybe helpful for new Kindle Fire owners.

Go to our eMedia Catalog an get the Overdrive app from overdrive.com/software/omc.  To get the app, you need to click on Mobile/Android device and then click where it says “If your device doesn’t support Android Market, you can download OverDrive Media Console for Android from OverDrive.”

Once you have an item checked out and downloaded via the Amazon app (that part works the same as the Kindle eReaders downloads from our eMedia Catalog), go to Settings/Wi-Fi and tap on Sync. Then the book will show in the bookshelf and be able to be read.

The other problem with the app as it is now, unlike the app for iPad that only allows you to checkout and download material that will work with the iPad, the Kindle Fire app allows the user to checkout anything – some formats will not work on the Kindle Fire but are still considered checked out to the user (taking up some of their limit) and they are not returnable via the Amazon login. Kindle Fire only works with Kindle editions and MP3 audiobooks. No video, music of WMA formats.

Supposedly it will download epub editions but it requires the user to have an Adobe ID. Really hoping Amazon continues their cooperation with Overdrive and allows a better app to be made available.

Other comments about the Kindle Fire and Library eBooks can be found at the Amazon.com Customer Discussion site.

OverDrive’s eBook & audiobook app for Windows Phone now available

Today we released OverDrive Media Console for Windows Phone, which enables Windows Phone users to download EPUB eBooks and MP3 audiobooks from public, K-12 school, and higher ed libraries. We’re excited for this release, not just because library eBooks and audiobooks will be available on popular smartphones such as LG Quantum, Samsung Focus, and HTC Trophy, but also because it means OverDrive now supports every major mobile and desktop operating system, including Windows, Mac, iPad/iPhone (iOS), Android, and BlackBerry.

Like OverDrive’s apps for other mobile platforms, the Windows Phone app includes a “Get Books” feature so that users can easily find your library. Users can then browse the mobile version of your ‘Virtual Branch’ website, check out an EPUB eBook or MP3 audiobook with a library card, and download the title directly to their device. While the feature set remains the same, the OverDrive app takes advantage of the Windows Phone platform to provide a unique user experience.

The free OverDrive Media Console for Windows Phone app is available in the Windows Phone Marketplace and can be installed on all Windows Phone devices.

Check out the Windows Phone app on your device or watch the video below, and let us know what you think.

eAudio Books (WMA format) and Apple Devices

What additional requirements are there for transferring OverDrive WMA Audiobooks to Apple devices?

Most OverDrive WMA Audiobook titles can be transferred to Apple devices (where permitted by the publisher) using the Transfer Wizard in OverDrive Media Console v3.2.0.5 (or newer).

Before you begin, make sure that the title supports transfer to Apple devices. The publisher of each title decides whether or not to allow the title to be transferred to an Apple device. To determining whether a title can be transferred to an Apple device, there are two places you can check to see if a title can be transferred to an Apple device. You can check the eMedia Catalog or, if you have already downloaded the title, you can use OverDrive Media Console.

In the eMedia Catalog check whether a title can be transferred to an Apple device as follows…

Search for the desired title, and click it to bring up the page displaying details about the title. At this page, look for the heading ‘Digital Rights Information’. The information listed here will clearly indicate whether or not the publisher has enabled transfer to Apple device functionality.

In OverDrive Media Console v3.2.0.5 (or newer), check whether a title that you have already downloaded can be transferred to an Apple device as follows…

  1. In OverDrive Media Console, highlight the title and click the Properties button.
The Properties dialog box is displayed.
  2. Click the License tab.
License details for the title are displayed. The Transfer to Apple® device field indicates whether the title can be transferred to an Apple device.
  3. Click the Cancel button to close the Properties dialog box.

Now that you have confirmed the title can be transferred to an Apple device make sure:

  • iTunes v9.1 (or newer) is installed.
  • The Apple device is formatted for use with Microsoft Windows.
  • The iTunes setting Manually manage music…must be enabled for Apple devices. Adjust this setting as follows…
    1. Connect the device to your computer.
    2. If it does not launch automatically, open iTunes (v9.1 or newer).
    3. In iTunes, locate the device in the left vertical navigation panel (under heading DEVICES), and click the device.
      The Summary screen is displayed.
    4. If it is not already checked, place a checkmark next to option Manually manage music….
    5. Click the Apply button.
The iTunes Summary screen refreshes, and your changes are saved.
    6. If desired, close iTunes.
  • When OverDrive WMA Audiobooks are transferred to Apple devices, the DRM-protected WMA files that make up the audiobook must be converted. The conversion process typically takes a few minutes per Part, resulting in transfer times that are longer than what you typically see on Apple devices. To minimizing the time it takes to transfer OverDrive WMA Audiobook titles to Apple devices, before transferring OverDrive WMA Audiobook titles to Apple devices, the Transfer Wizard detects the iTunes settings that affect transfer time and sound quality. If your iTunes settings do not match OverDrive Media Console’s recommended settings, the Transfer Wizard displays a prompt that shows both the current iTunes settings and the recommended settings. At this prompt, you can press the F1 key to access detailed instructions for updating iTunes settings. After the files are transferred to the device, the Transfer Wizard displays your previous iTunes settings so that you can, if desired, restore the original settings.

Why does my eAudio book open in Open Office?

The Problem:

My eAudio Book opens in Open Office instead of OverDrive Media Console.

The Answer:

Open Office uses the file extension .odm for a word processing document, therefore there is a conflict between Overdrive’s audio type .odm and Open Offices file type .odm. You will need to change which program opens an .odm file.

Please try this procedure and proceed with caution when changing the configuration of your computer.

For Windows Vista and System 7.

  1. Go to Start > Control Panel > Set your Default Programs > Click ‘OK’
  2. Select Associate a file type or protocol with a program.
  3. Under the ‘Extensions’ heading, select ‘.odm’ and click the ‘Change program’ button
  4. Select Overdrive Media Console from the ‘Recommended Programs’ list
  5. Click OK.
  6. Click Close
